Washington Square

Originally named Southeast Square, and renamed to commemorate George Washington in 1825, Washington Square memorializes Washington but the numerous Revolutionary soldiers and sailors that are known to be buried there.   The Square is thought to have more Revolutionary dead buried than at any other place in the nation.  Washington Square sets to the southwest of Independence Hall and is bound to the north by Walnut Street and east by South 6th Street.
